21 Moments That Shocked Us In 2014, And They Might Just Break Your Heart Again

2014 is fast ending, what a year it was? From crisis in Ukraine, The Ebola in West Africa, The Missing Plane, The Shooting Down of the Plane, truly this year certainly had its ups and downs.

The list below is a list of the items that are probably we wont be forgetting fast. Regardless, we’ve started  compiling the list and we will be updating it up until the end of 2014. Up to now 2014 was a lot more tragic than we thought it would be…

1. Crisis In Ukraine – January 2014 – Present.

Massive protest movement in Ukraine. Russian supporting separatist factions in the eastern parts of the country.

2. The Polar Vortex – January 2014


The Polar Vortex was causing things to freeze and hit USA in early part of 2014.


3. Ebola Outbreak in West Africa Begins – February 2014

2014 saw the start of the deadliest and most widespread Ebola outbreak to date in West Africa.

4. Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 Goes Missing – March 2014

During the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 disappeared over the Gulf of Thailand with all 239 passengers on board. The wreckage from the flight is still missing.

5. 276 Girls Go Missing In Nigeria – April 2014  – Present.


Jihadist militant group Boko Haram shocked the world when it abducted 276 school girls from their school in the town of Chibok, Nigeria. The girls have still not been returned to their families.

6. South Korean Ferry Sinking – April 2014

The South Korean commercial ferry MV Sewol Sank killing 290 people, most of whom were high school students. Blame for the capsized ferry was placed on an unmanageable cargo shift that occurred while the ferry was in transit.

7. Avalanche on Mount Everest – April 2014




In mid April 2014, an avalanche on Mount Everest Base Camp resulted in the death of 16 Nepalese guides, also known as Sherpas.

8. Mine Disaster In Turkey – May 2014

An explosion at the Soma, Manisa coal mine killed 301 miners, and injured 80 others. It’s the deadliest mining disaster that Turkey ever witnessed.

 9. Elliot Rodger’s Killing Spree – May 2014

At the age of 22 Elliot Rodger went on a killing spree on and around the campus of UC Santa Barbara. 6 people were killed and 13 others injured.

In May 2014 two 12 years old Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier stabbed and nearly killed their classmate, Payton Leutner who was also 12. The two planned out the attempted killing for 5 months as a way to please the fictional internet character of Slender Man. Leutner survived and escaped to safety.


11. Death of Maya Angelou – May 2014

One of the greatest American Author and poet died at the age of 86

12. Islamic State – June 2014 – Present

The radical militant group known as the Islamic State began a massive offensive that swallowed whole parts of Iraq and Syria.


13. Jared Michael Padgett’s School Shooting – June 2014



Jared Michael Padgett killed a fellow student during a shooting spree at Reynolds High School in Oregon, before turning the gun on himself. This is was the 74th school shooting since the Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012.

 14. Brasil Suffer the biggest football defeat of all time. Utterly humiliation 08-July-2014

The game ended in a shocking loss for Brasil; Germany led 5–0 at half time, with 4 goals scored in a span of 6 minutes, and subsequently brought the score up to 7–0 in the second half. Brazil scored a goal at the last minute, ending the match 7–1.

15. Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 Is Shot Down Over Ukraine – July 2014

Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile while flying over Ukrainian airspace. All 298 people on board died in the crash.

16. Air Algerie Flight 5017 Crashes in Mali – July 2014


All 116 people on board Air Algerie Flight 5017 were killed when it crashed in Mali.

17. Israel Invades The Gaza Strip Again – July – August 2014


Growing tensions between Israel and Hamas lead to Operation Protective Edge in the Gaza strip.

18. Riots Erupt In Ferguson, Missouri – August 2014 – Present


Following the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, riots erupted in Ferguson, Missouri to protest police violence.

19. Robin Williams Killed Himself – August 2014


Academy Award winning actor Robin Williams took his own life at his home in California.

20. Death Of Joan Rivers – September 2014


Actress and Comedian Joan Rivers died of complications following surgery.

21. CIA Torture Report – December 2014

A congressional report is released detailing the brutal torture tactics used by the CIA on terror suspects in the years following 9/11.
